By 2030, we aim to achieve zero waste-to-landfill status at 100% of our manufacturing facilities. At the same time, we are committed to reducing the volume of waste generated by 2% annually.
We achieve our ZWTL initiatives by reuse, recycling, composting and incineration for energy generation. We use third-party verification to ensure the quality of our program. Our approach prioritizes beneficial diversion, and the process starts with source reduction — eliminating waste streams before they reach our facilities. We then engage partners to help us divert our remaining waste from landfill.
All Eaton sites must manage waste responsibly in accordance with regulations and our internal EHS Management (MESH) standards, including identifying all waste streams and creating waste minimization plans.
While output from our facilities around the world increased in 2019, 55% of our sites have achieved zero waste-to-landfill (ZWTL) certification — an 11% increase over 2018. In 2019 we reduced our waste to landfill by 1,500 metric tons and our recycling rate was 92% of total waste, an improvement over the prior year by almost 6% and 3%, respectively.
